Chloe Mitchell: The Poet Kanye West & Rihanna Love

While I’m sure many of you tuned into Rihanna’s newest album Anti and Kanye’s 2010 hit “Blame Game,” you may not have known that today’s feature, Chloe Mitchell, played a big part in both projects. Her poem titled “If they let us,” is written in braille on Rihanna’s latest album cover. And Kanye recites “Your bitter is my sweet,” also written by Chloe on his track “Blame Game.”

Growing up in Harlem, and using poetry as just a way to express her feelings, she never imagined that her love for writing would take her this far. But through faith and a great support system she was able to achieve her goals.

Find out more about Chloe including how she got the opportunity to team up with Rihanna and Kanye and see what else she is working on below.

How was your childhood growing up? What experiences, negative or positive, profoundly impacted your life?

I had a pretty normal childhood. One experience that did impact my life for the positive was skipping a grade. My twin sister and I both excelled in reading and writing from a very young age. Our reading and writing levels was far advance than other children in our class. When it was time to get promoted from 1st to 2nd grade, we jumped to 3rd grade. It was a pretty cool achievement for the both of us, especially being so young.

When did you discover your love for poetry?

I started writing when I was about 7 years old and at the time it wasn't something I thought I "loved" per se. It was just a way for me to express my feelings growing up because it's always been difficult for me to be vocal about my feelings. It became a form of self-therapy and I never stopped using writing to help me get through all of the experiences life threw at me.

What inspired you to write your book, Therapy Sessions, Vol. 1?

I had so much material, and pages and pages of poems from writing at such a young age. After I worked with Kanye for “Blame Game” on My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, it really inspired me to write my book. People wanted more from me, not just from my Tumblr or Instagram to look to. People wanted something they could take home and refer back to whenever they wanted to at their convenience.

We know that you recently worked with Rihanna on her new album, Anti. How did you land that amazing opportunity?

She had heard about me through my work with Kanye and she said she always wanted to work with me but wanted to find the perfect project for me to be on. I think she was waiting for something different for me to do. She didn't want to do the same thing Kanye did, with him reciting my poem on his song. Rihanna's idea was brilliant because it's never been done before and I feel so blessed that she wanted me to be a part of it.

What keeps you motivated, especially on your worst days?

It may sound weird, but it's those days that keep me motivated. I take advantage of my anger or sorrow and put that energy into writing. It's a habit of mine to write out how I feel so I guess you can say that I'm always motivated. It works out pretty well in my favor.

I take advantage of my anger or sorrow and put that energy into writing.

What advice do you have for women aspiring to be successful in your industry?

Keep going and continue working towards your goals and aspirations. Success doesn't happen overnight and you have to always believe in yourself. The moments where you lose faith or start doubting yourself, make sure you have people who will uplift you and support you to make sure you finish what you start.

What's in store for Chloe Mitchell? What do you hope to accomplish in your lifetime?

I just want to publish more books, work with more artists, and make a positive impact in the world. I want people to be inspired by me and what I stand for. I want to aspire to inspire and let them know that anything is possible. And from a girl from Harlem, you never know where life takes you; all you have to do is believe in yourself first.
