Trinidadian Entrepreneur Ameniki Omotola on How to Embrace Setbacks and Pursue New Ventures

12 years ago, Ameniki was diagnosed with Lupus. She underwent chemo treatment, hair loss, and fought for her life – and she won. Now she is a vibrant and fearless social media influencer that cannot be contained. Her online company propels talented and ambitious entrepreneurs to fight for their passion and inspires them to continue their purposeful journey.

What has helped shape you into the woman you are today?

Being Trinidadian, 100% Trini Girl, growing up on an island, is something that a lot of islanders take for granted! I am unapologetically an island girl. I love hot weather and the beach. The community life, talking to my neighbors, the “banana republic” mentality, our diverse culture, our carnival and music, and everything about my magical island has molded me into this fearless chick who is just as bad as Nicki and Cardi B (she’s half Trini by the way). Trini girls are bad and we’re here to stay!

What lead you to create Trinidad Mogulista?

Trinidad Mogulista was born out of my hustling spirit, I knew that I had a voice for business and entrepreneurship. I also had experience of what NOT to do in business, I just needed to mesh both ends of the spectrum.

I knew there was limited information out there on running a creative business in Trinidad because I lived it. I had many ideas for a business but didn’t know exactly how to channel it. I started these businesses and just dropped them because I did not have the foundation necessary to navigate a small business.

I also have a three-year old daughter and I want her to be proud of her mom. I want to leave a legacy of greatness for her and I want her to know that she can be dope just by trying something new.

What has been your most memorable challenge?

My life has been full of challenges. My constant challenge is finding the energy to work. You see twelve years ago I was diagnosed with Systematic Lupus Erythematosus. It’s a chronic illness that attacks your organs and your life. I was hospitalized and I made it through a series of chemotherapy treatments where I lost my hair and my will. I had to learn to live again.

Living with a chronic illness has many bad days, but you learn to appreciate the good.

What is your favorite quote or mantra to live by?

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” “Excuses are the tools of the incompetent and those who use them seldom amount to anything” and “Just do it, Jump!”

What advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs?

That the money will come even when you are at your lowest it WILL come. In pursuit of your passion, there will be a scenic route that you are going to HAVE to take. Everyone takes this route, it is filled with bruised egos and tears, but at the end of it, you will have everything to build a successful business.  In addition, laugh. Laugh at the craziness!
