Your Dreams or Your Parents Dreams
One of the worst things you can do in life is ignore your calling. All of us have a passion for something. It can be fashion, music, technology, books and so on. Or, maybe we have dreamt of starting our own business or attempting to be a musician or movie producer. However, we have a lot of pressure from our parents to finish college or university and get a degree that we are willing to put aside our dreams to please others. We don't even attempt to chase our dreams because we're concerned about our parent's opinions. Or we think about the downfall of chasing our goals such as failing and imagine the disappointment in their eyes or assume that they will be embarrassed. Or we simply don’t want to hear their criticism and judgment. We prefer to live our life safe than let others see us fail. But is sacrificing your dreams to please people who think they know what you deserve worth it? Are you going to be happy with your career choice in the next ten years knowing that it wasn't your choice?
Parents take great pride in seeing their children succeed. They have our best interest at heart and have many concerns. Some of them just want us to have a better life than them. They want us to have a better living because they don't want us to be in a position where we have trouble making ends meet or having a mediocre 9 to 5 job. For example, a parent that has two jobs and have trouble paying bills will most likely encourage his child to go to university and have a stable career than pursuing an unorthodox career such as modeling or acting because there's no guarantee that he will have a long lasting career. They push us into careers that we have never wanted for ourselves because they want us to be financially stable. Some parents are trapped in the traditional ways of thinking that they assume that having a university degree will give their children a head start life. They failed to realize that university isn't the only way that leads to a better living.
For instance, YouTubers such as Superwoman(Lilly Singh), PewDiePie and Roman Atwood are the top earning you Youtube stars that make more than two million dollars a year. They have created their own path to success with the help of Youtube and now have a large following. Sophia Amoruso, the founder of Nasty Gal, had created a multi-million dollar fashion company and was named one of the richest self-made women in the world by Forbes in 2016. Despite the fact that Sophia has never finished college and doesn't have a business degree, she used her edgy fashion sense to create a retail website and turn it into a multi-millionnaire company.
This world is filled with creative minds that we don't necessarily need to have traditional careers such as doctor, dentist, lawyer, architect and so on. Fortunately, when they see us dedicate our time and energy into our dreams then they start supporting us and are less skeptical of our plans. That's some of us need to prove to them that we are aware of these obstacles and we are willing to do everything it takes to achieve our dreams.
However, not all parents are supportive of their children aspirations. Sometimes when you follow a path that is different from what your parents expected, you will run into tension and resistance from your family. They aren't necessarily concerned about your happiness but their own. They assume that if you don't succeed, it will have a negative impact on their image and it will reflect on them.Furthermore, some parents also attempted to live vicariously through kids achievements and have bragging rights. As long as you attend the most prestigious school or a high status six figure job, your happiness doesn't matter. They want them to fulfill their failed dreams and have the opportunities that they had never have. They want their kids to become what they weren't able to be.They can reject the idea of their child pursuing their aspirations and they will even attempt to talk you out of it.
If you don't listen to their advice or have the career that they want to have, they can treat you as an outcast or disown you.If you want to be successful, you need to surround yourself with people you support you and believe in you. That's why the best thing you can do is stay away from them if you have the choice because their negative energy can be draining. Living someone else's dream than their own isn't the way to live and it's the path to an unfulfilled existence. The worst thing you can do in life is chase things that don't benefit to your happiness.
If you know what you're passionate about, you should consider yourself very lucky because there's a lot of people in this world that don't know what their true calling is. That's why you need to follow your dreams and create your own path that is separate from your parents because you can't live your life according to other people expectations. Please remember that your happiness is more important than anything else.
