We’re in the Age of the Woman
By Manuela Domingos
I can’t think of any better time period than now that the issues and movements of women have been put in the forefront. More than ever, we are empowered to embrace our curves, step out without make-up, and care less about wearing “too much make-up.”
It is the age of female presidential candidates, adorn female celebrities who can break the internet with their bare bottoms, and female singers who can freely sing about their personal relationship troubles and release it to the world for other women to relate and enjoy.
It is the age of feminism, where stereotypical memes focused on big boned powerful “angry” female archetypes protesting in our streets about equal pay grace the internet, and the idolization of Lupita N’yongo like melanin grace the covers of our magazines and televisions.
It is the age of Michelle Obama like intellectualism, men wanting their own dose of an “Ayesha Curry,” slut shaming, and cultural appropriation.
It is the age of social media & fame; rappers drop bars about thin waists and wide hip bodies, tea detox model sponsorships circulate social media, and hours are spent online browsing YouTube make-up tutorials and “30-day butt Challenge” workout videos.
It is the age of the fashion forward movement, the trend setters, the goal getters. It is the age of the Instagram model, the educated woman, the hyped exotic dancer.
It is the Age of the Woman; powerful women pushing progressive agendas, stifled voices coming forefront, strutted heels clacking against the soil of big cities, where dreams and ambitions are bustling and the thirst for recognition are more present than ever.
My, oh my, it is the Age of the Woman.
Let us support our Women, lift our Women, recognize our Women, embrace our Women.
This is the age of the Woman, the generation of building Women, where now, more than ever, our Women get to shine.
