What experiences helped shape the woman you are today?
My mom and dad’s early inspirations. My mom has never been a quitter and my dad had a successful law practice. They taught me to keep going no matter the obstacles.
The most important experiences that have shaped the woman I am today, would be leaving my job in corporate America, to step out on faith to pursue my career in fashion and marrying my husband. These two important days in my life have been beautiful uncharted territory for me, and forced me to grow and mature in God. God blessed me with a life partner who has been my support system and rock throughout this experience. There have been many nights when I wanted to quit, give up, give in, but my faith in God and my husband have been my strength to press forward.
Growing up did you experience any insecurities? If so, how did you overcome them?
I experienced many insecurities growing up, in particular my skin color, I was teased about being dark skinned, and I spoke proper English so I was called an Oreo during grade school. I was also teased about my body shape which led to unhealthy eating habits, which then led to an eating disorder that continued throughout my college years. I learned a lot about myself during that time, I decided that my health was far more important than others thought of me, that's when the shift began to happen. My eating disorder is far behind me now, but I still make time to speak out about it, in hopes to encourage young women who are struggling with the disease.
What inspired you to get into the fashion industry?
I always knew I wanted to work in fashion or TV, it was going to be one or the other, but I've been blessed to do both. Celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe was my inspiration early on in my career, she's who I set as my goal in college. Even still, I admire her work ethic and the fact that she has a family and career. I love that! And, I've been fortunate to meet her many times.
What are some challenges you face being an African American woman in that industry?
Challenges I've faced in the industry include being overlooked because of my skin color or not taken serious until the job was completed. I've been rejected many times, but that hasn't stopped me from continuing to build my empire. I've learned that it's not how many no's you get but how many times you go back and try again, eventually those no's will turn into yes. I'm a witness to that. The key is to be persistent even when you don't want to. It will pay off.
What are some things you hope to accomplish in the future?
I plan to expand my brand into multiple products including beauty and accessories. There will be more collections coming soon as well. I also plan to expand my family and have some little ones.
