Kenisha Jones: The Road to Success

Born into an entrepreneurial family, Kenisha was no stranger to bravado and determination. With high hopes and faith, Kenisha left her hometown of New Orleans, Louisiana to Dallas, Texas and never looked back. Through her courage, she has developed into one of the most sought after make-up artists in Texas.

Her makeup company, Sitting Pretty, embodies the art of confidence, self-esteem, and beauty.

What experiences, negative or positive, shaped you into the woman you are today?

My family is truly my backbone and I wouldn’t be the woman I am today without them. I recently moved to Dallas, Texas from New Orleans, Louisiana to complete my undergraduate degree. I believe this transition has physically and emotionally made me stronger. I am wiser, tenacious, and I know what I want out of life. My mentality is I will not take no for an answer. I’m willing to work hard, encourage and motivate myself, and pursue my purpose.

What made you decide your career path?

As a young girl, I watched my mom style hair and operate multiple businesses as an entrepreneur. I naturally wanted to follow behind her foot steps and make people feel beautiful and inspired. My first lipstick was “Please Me” by Mac. After I purchased the lipstick, it truly changed my life. I wanted to buy more and more makeup. I loved makeup so much! I began investing in myself and striving to be the very best makeup artist I could be.

What are some obstacles you've had to overcome in the industry and how did you overcome them?

Self-esteem. I personally used to struggle with self-esteem. I wanted to look like those Instagram girls. However, I realized that I have to love myself the way I am. I look in the mirror sometimes and say words of affirmation such as “you look good today girl” or “your highlights are popping.” I feel over time that I have become more confident and that I believe in myself. I had to silence those outside noises and expectations placed upon me by everyone else. I understand that I don’t need people to validate my beauty because no one’s thoughts matter besides mine. I believe you have to speak positively about yourself and believe your affirmations.

I had to silence those outside noises and expectations placed upon me by everyone else.

What advice do you have for younger girls pursuing the same career path?

My brand is called Sitting Pretty because I want all of my clients to know they are beautiful before I even apply makeup on their faces. As the oldest of two sisters, I believe every girl should feel beautiful and embrace their individual uniqueness. My advice for young girls and guys who love makeup is to never give up on your dream. Your dream will happen but it must first start with you. One of my favorite quotes is “invest in yourself, strive harder, and don’t expect anything from anyone.” That quote embodies the importance of work ethic. I hustle every day. I invest in myself and I don’t expect anything from anyone until I can deliver first. Each day, each thought, each idea is worth the investment. I also encourage those pursuing the make-up industry to network. Join social media and actively pursue those in the make-up business. As you patiently wait, people will begin to pursue you and see your value.

What are your current and future goals for yourself? Where can we find your work?

My current goals for myself is to graduate from college and launch my clothing line. My future goals include traveling to New York and interning for Mac and Colour Pop cosmetics.

Afterwards, I will start my own cosmetic line and continue to collaborate with other influencers in the industry. My work can be found on Instagram @sittinggprettyyy and you can contact me at
